In an effort to increase sustainability education opportunities in the Kootenays, leaders in sustainable design and education met in 2010 and discussed ways to collaborate. We did make the Sustainable Building Advisor Program available at Selkirk College, in Nelson. There was not enough students to launch the program there, but there is a strong network of people passionate about sustainability, energy and resource conservation, and green building strategies- so please feel free to contact us if you have any interest in seeing this program, or the Building Energy and Resource Management program offered in your area.
Both of these programs are of interest to architects, engineers, city planners, builders, realtors, developers, facility Managers, and other building industry professionals who take these courses to increase their knowledge of sustainable design practices. The courses appeal to anyone interested in learning more about sustainability, and to those wanting to change or start their career in this field.
As the article, “Ask your landlord about their green credentials” illustrates, an exponentially growing awareness of sustainability solutions, and grave environmental and energy concerns, points to an immediate need for trained professionals in all sectors of the built environment.
