An important development: there will be two BC Building Energy Code sessions at the upcoming Building Officials Association of BC Conference:
BC Energy Step Code Essentials for Building Officials – Friday, November 30 10:30 am – 12:00 pm
Join BCESC specialists in a presentation introducing BC Energy Step Code basics that will cover both Part 9 and Part 3 buildings’ definitions, metrics, and changes that can be expected as high-performance building enclosures and mechanical systems are adopted. For more information, please visit BOABC’s conference website.
Implementing the BC Energy Step Code: Key Changes to Roles and Process – Friday, November 30 3:00 – 4:00 pm
This session is will highlight key role and process changes that adoption of the BC Energy Step Code can lead to for Building Officials. Presenters will include Building Officials, Community Energy BC, and others with BC Energy Step Code implementation experience. For more information, please visit BOABC’s conference website
British Columbia is incrementally increasing BC Building Code energy-efficiency requirements towards a goal of net-zero energy ready by 2032. The BC Energy Step Code is:
- a voluntary provincial standard that goes beyond the base BC Building Code
incremental, using the same metrics for each increasingly energy-efficient step
based on measurable, performance-based energy-efficiency requirements
currently being adopted by a number of jurisdictions, who are increasing the capacity of builders, building officials through educational workshops - a replacement for different green building standards that have been required or encouraged by local governments in the past
- a performance-based vs.the traditional prescriptive approach
- a means to identify energy-efficiency targets while allowing the designer/builder to decide how to meet the targets
reliant on energy modelling software and on-site testing to demonstrate that the design and the construction meet the requirements of the BC Energy Step Code - a way to empower builders to pursue innovative, creative, cost-effective solutions
- a fuel-neutral approach that provides builders with the flexibility to make energy-efficient buildings using all available technologies.
- a way for local governments to require or encourage builders to meet one or more steps of the BC Energy Step Code as an alternative to the BC Building Code’s prescriptive requirements
